Refill London in Lewisham

In the UK alone, it is estimated that 800 plastic bottles per MINUTE end up in landfill or as litter. At the current rate by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.

Lewisham has been chosen as a pilot site for Refill London, a free water refill scheme backed by Thames Water and The Mayor of London. Refill London aims to make tap water refills accessible through local businesses becoming free Refill Stations.

Thirsty passers-by can spot stickers in the window of Refill Stations, or they can check their Refill app, and pop in to top up their water bottles on the go, avoiding yet more plastic pollution generated by single use plastics.

The scheme will begin to be developed in March 2018, but we need your help!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits for businesses?

Refill will bring in passers-by who may be tempted to make purchases and also tell others to visit the business. Plus, this is a huge boost to business environmental credentials and will boost both visibility and perception of local businesses.

Will offering refills affect bills?
A litre of water costs just 0.02p. Filling up ten 500ml bottles costs only a penny.

I thought businesses had to offer water as a legal requirement?

Yes, but many people feel shy asking. The stickers invite passers-by into businesses – which could result in a spontaneous purchase.

How much will I help the environment?

The carbon footprint of bottled water is 500% higher than producing tap water. Some of it is shipped half way across the world! Only 25% of bottles actually get recycled, and not all the materials are recyclable (bottle tops aren’t recycled in the UK for example). That leads to over 800 bottles going into landfill every MINUTE.

Who is involved locally?

Lewisham Local and Business in the Community have been asked to be involved in the pilot due to our network of community minded businesses in Lewisham. We are helping co-ordinate volunteer action days and promote the scheme to local businesses.
