The Soup Kitchen was launched in May 2017 after the UCKG HelpCentre opened up the kitchen for one day during the Christmas period and we saw there was a huge need for free meals in Catford. The Soup Kitchen is run on Saturdays from 11-2pm and we provide soup, bread and light refreshments to anyone in need. We get people coming along who are living in temporary accommodation, homeless people, people on low wages, young people and those who are looking for company and somewhere to keep warm.
Initially volunteers and members of the church funded The Soup Kitchen ourselves. As time went on this became difficult so we contacted our Local Lidl and Greggs who gave us their unsold food. We then worked with FareShare who linked us up with our local Tesco who also gave us their unsold food. This has helped us develop important links in the community and has kept The Soup Kitchen running. This work would never have been possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Now I am known as the “Charity Lady” and recognised by the customers in the store. But what is more fulfilling is that the gifts of food enables us to make a difference in the community by supporting those who are most in need.
